New online application and applicant workshops streamline submission process
SAN DIEGO – October 11, 2017 – The San Diego Tourism Marketing District (SDTMD) will begin accepting applications for funding from tourism-related events and programs within the City of San Diego for fiscal year 2019 beginning October 24. SDTMD awards over $1.5 million in grant funding each year to applicants who can demonstrate the ability to generate incremental room night stays at TMD assessed hotels as well as a measureable return on investment (ROI) on TMD dollars.
This year, SDTMD has moved the application process online. Potential applicants can access the application at www.sdtmd.org/applications effective Oct. 24. Applications must be submitted to SDTMD by 5 p.m. on Fri., Dec. 8, 2017.
Additionally, SDTMD is hosting two applicant workshops on Tues., Oct. 24 and Fri., Nov. 3 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Workshops will provide an overview of the application process, insight on criteria used to select events for funding and an introduction to the new online submission system. The Oct. 24 workshop will be held at the Omni Hotel in downtown San Diego. The Nov. 3 workshop will be held at 12230 El Camino Real, San Diego CA, 92130.
“SDTMD is committed to accelerating San Diego’s tourism economy by supporting programs that maximize ROI to benefit TMD paying hotels,” said Scott Hermes, SDTMD board chair.
“When this happens, the result is an enhanced the quality of life for all San Diegans through the availability of good jobs, superior visitor infrastructure and expanded Transient Occupancy Tax collections that allow civic leaders to provide for quality resident services such as parks, police and fire.”
It is important that applicants review the requirements when applying for funds as all events must demonstrate incremental growth in hotel room nights and ROI.
SDTMD is a funding conduit of sales and marketing programs and services that support tourism in San Diego. The SDTMD Board of Directors reviews each application submitted and awards funding to the marketing and sales programs likely to generate the most incremental room night sales at assessed properties. Past programs funded by SDTMD include California State Games, Red Bull Air Races, San Diego Bowl Games and Surf Challenge.

Board names new officers and elects a new board member to kick-off its fiscal year
SAN DIEGO; Aug. 8, 2017 – Scott Hermes, General Manager of the Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter, was named Chairman of the San Diego Tourism Marketing District (TMD) at the organization’s July 24 board meeting. The TMD is a business improvement district in the City of San Diego that funds strategies to grow hotel stays and transient occupancy tax revenue.
A member of the TMD board since 2015 with over 30 years of industry experience, Hermes most recently served as board Vice Chairman. He takes over the Chairman role from William “Bill” Evans of Evans Hotels, who has stepped down from the board following nine years of service.
“I’d like to acknowledge and thank Bill for his many contributions to the TMD board, in particular his last two years serving as Chairman,” said Hermes. “I’m excited to help lead the organization forward, especially as we embark on some ambitious goals for growing tourism in the City of San Diego.”
Joining Hermes as Officers are Vice-Chairman Matt Adams, Area Vice President for the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego; Secretary Colleen Anderson, General Manager of Omni San Diego; and Treasurer C. Terry Brown, President of Atlas Hotels.
Other TMD board members include Richard Bartell, President of Bartell Hotels; Matt Greene, General Manager of the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego; and Christopher Ostapovicz, Regional Vice-President, Asset Management for Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. as well as newly-elected Director Elvin Lai, CEO and President of Ocean Park Inn.
