San Diego Thunderboats

A San Diego tradition since the 1960s, San Diego Bayfair is a three-day festival held in Mission Bay Park with powerboat racing as its centerpiece. Usually attracting more than 100,000 regional and national visitors, the event has seen a dramatic increase in the number of attendees and the number of hotel rooms booked since becoming partners with the SDTMD.

The 2016 event on September 18-20, saw 83 teams compete (a 20 percent increase in race teams participating), with many of team members coming from Arizona, Indiana, and Washington. Family oriented, Bayfair offers live music, beer gardens, kids’ activities, food booths, and a wide range of additional attractions.

With $95,000 in funding from SDTMD in FY 2016, the event´s return on investment was 29.5:1, generating 15,911 hotel room nights (compared with 12,282 in FY 2015), which yielded almost $2.8 million in total room night revenue (compared with almost $2.1 million in FY 2015).
